Five gay rights activists were detained in Russia for delivering a petition which referred to alleged gay torture in Chechnya. Last week president Putin backed an inquiry into reported crackdown in the caucasian region. Even though homosexuality was decriminalised in 1993 the concern of homophobia in Russia remains high. It is because of strict laws like for example, gay people are not allowed to hold their hands in public. But also the general opinion that comes from authorities, in Russia as well as in Chechnya is the reason for such dramatic circumstances.
Honestly, I'm quite not surprised by the fact that in Caucasian region people are ashamed or feel offended by homosexuals even in the 21st century. Their mindset, culture and philosophy are completely different from western. I think it might come from religion as well.
This is a very thorny subject but I believe every single human being deserves to be happy as long as is not hurting anyone else. No one should be tortured or persecuted for their orientation.

What is happening in Chechnya is much more sinister than in Russia.
